Plans to construct an EV battery gigafactory have been unveiled by Coventry Metropolis Council and Coventry Airport.
The West Midlands Mixed Authority – which represents the area’s seven city councils and is led by the West Midlands mayor – has endorsed the airport as its most popular location for the event.
It’s claimed that the location might present as much as 4.5 million sq ft of business house and that battery manufacturing might appeal to £2 billion of funding to the realm.
The UK authorities has put aside £500m to spend money on a gigafactory, which the Coventry challenge will probably be bidding for “in the end”.
“I’ve been completely obsessive about securing a gigafactory for the West Midlands, because of the large financial and job advantages it will convey,” stated West Midlands mayor Andy Road. “And so I am delighted we have introduced our most popular website and brought an enormous leap ahead in the present day.
“The purpose I’ve been ferociously lobbying to [the] authorities is that the West Midlands is the pure place for a UK gigafactory, as we’re already dwelling to the nation’s greatest automobile producer, Europe’s largest analysis centre, the UK’s solely battery industrialisation centre and a world-leading provide chain.”
Jaguar Land Rover, Aston Martin Lagonda, the London Electrical Car Firm (LEVC) and BMW all have bases within the West Midlands, together with a number of others.
The federal government will ban the sale of recent petrol and diesel autos from 2030, and with automobile makers more and more switching to EVs to scale back emissions, the necessity for a British battery plant is rising quickly.

No timescale has been positioned on the development of the gigafactory, though challenge bosses say their plans will probably be developed and submitted this 12 months. It’s hoped that the gigafactory will probably be operational by 2025.
