ANCAP Security has issued a shock three-star security score for the Hyundai i30 Sedan.

The score is utilized to all i30 Sedan hybrid (from February 2024) and facelifted petrol-powered fashions offered within the Australian market from October final yr (2023) – excluding the i30 Sedan N.

Petrol-powered i30 Sedan variants constructed earlier than June 2023 are unrated by ANCAP Security.

The security physique says the security score efficiency of the i30 Sedan was “restricted by scores in Grownup Occupant Safety, Susceptible Highway Consumer Safety, and Security Help” evaluation classes.

ANCAP Security famous the absence of superior AEB capabilities – together with head-on and crossing features – and the inclusion of normal blind-spot monitoring as problematic.

The Hyundai i30 Sedan was issued with a 71 per cent rating within the Grownup Occupant Safety class, an 81 per cent rating within the Youngster Occupant Safety class, a 62 per cent rating within the Susceptible Highway Consumer class, and a 56 per cent rating within the Security Help class.

“The Hyundai i30 is a well-liked alternative inside the Small Automobile section, and the addition of the hybrid powertrain this yr broadens shopper curiosity,” mentioned ANCAP Security chief govt officer Carla Hoorweg.

“This underscores the significance of getting an unbiased security score obtainable for this mannequin – so shoppers and fleets could make knowledgeable choices round security and decide which mannequin is true for them.”

“The Australian Authorities’s latest New Car Emissions Requirements (NVES) helps to offer car producers with the boldness to introduce extra alternative-powered fashions into the Australian market, but we had hoped Hyundai would have used this mid-cycle facelift alternative to raise the security efficiency of the i30 Sedan.”

“Hyundai has proven that they will ship five-star security, and we consider the i30 Sedan may obtain this with the precise security enhancements. Smaller autos are inherently extra weak resulting from their dimension, so it’s notably essential for producers to prioritise security to guard occupants and different street customers.”

Hyundai Motor Firm Australia informed GoAuto it won’t be making any remark regarding the ANCAP Security score issued in the present day.

Curiously, and in maybe highlighting the rising distinction between check requirements in several markets, the 2024 Hyundai i30 Sedan (which is offered because the Elantra in North American markets) scored high factors in stringent US NHTSA (Nationwide Freeway Site visitors Security Administration) testing.

Latest US assessments confirmed the mannequin achieved a five-star driver and four-star entrance seat occupant safety score in frontal collision eventualities, five-star entrance and rear seat occupant safety scores in side-collision eventualities, and a five-star occupant safety in roll-over collision eventualities.

“The Elantra earned an ideal rating for aspect crash and rollover assessments. This rating is partly due to this mannequin’s commonplace collision warning and lane departure warning programs,” mentioned the NHTSA.
