Pony.ai gets permit for driverless robotaxi services in China’s Guangzhou, ET Auto

Robotaxi startup Pony.ai mentioned on Wednesday that it had acquired a allow to function absolutely driverless ride-hailing companies in China’s Guangzhou metropolis.

The Toyota Motor Corp-backed startup, which has operations in China and the U.S., now has permits for absolutely driverless robotaxis in China’s capital Beijing and Guangzhou.

The autos won’t have people within the driving seat nor security operator.

Pony.ai began driverless testing in Guangzhou in June 2021 and has accrued almost 200,000 fee-charging robotaxi orders globally as of this month, the corporate mentioned in an announcement.

Final 12 months, the experience hailing startup and Baidu had been granted the primary licences to check absolutely autonomous autos with out security operators as a backup in Beijing. Each firms received permits for driverless taxi companies in Beijing final month.

California-based Pony.ai’s subsequent era robotaxi mannequin has obtained on-road testing licenses in Beijing and Guangzhou, it mentioned, including that robotaxi companies with the mannequin have been anticipated to start within the close to future.
