IIIH Hyderabad's pilot study on bus drivers finds AI improves safe driving behaviour

New Delhi: Synthetic Intelligence-based options enhance secure driving behaviour, in response to a pilot research by the Indian Institute of Data Know-how (IIIT), Hyderabad and Central Street Analysis Institute. In the course of the research, an AI-based Collision Avoidance Programs (CAS) put in on a fleet of buses in Nagpur confirmed marked discount in security alerts acquired, fostering higher driving practices.

“Within the preliminary interval, 50 Nagpur Municipal Company (NMC) Aapli buses had been chosen for putting in AI-based Collision Avoidance Programs (CAS) gadgets to review their effectiveness in bettering the security of public transport buses,” mentioned a senior official of IIIT Hyderabad.

“The research concerned bus drivers with diversified driving experiences. Automobiles and routes assigned to drivers weren’t fixed. The everyday hours of operation of the fleet of buses had been between 5 am and 11 pm.

“The pilot research analysed 3,00,000 km of distance coated by the buses from December 2021 to March 2022 with a median of 80 km pushed by a driver every day,” the official mentioned.

The AI-powered CAS constantly displays the street forward and warns the motive force within the type of audio and visible alerts just a few seconds earlier than a possible collision.

“As an illustration, it alerts (the motive force) in case of potential collisions with pedestrians, lane departure warnings, ahead collision warnings and in addition prompts to keep up secure distance from the automobile forward,” the official mentioned.

“Such real-time warnings are identified to enhance driver response time by as much as 2X which in flip reduces chance of collisions.”

Atleast 48 per cent drivers on common demonstrated enchancment in secure driving behaviour on the finish of the primary month of remark through discount in security alerts, the official mentioned.

“Enhancements in defensive driving practices like secure driving distance and application to Weak Street Customers (VRUs) are noteworthy,” the official mentioned.
